38" size Errata?

I started the sweater a couple of weeks ago and I'm still working on the body. But last night I was reading ahead in the pattern, excited about getting to the cabled yoke. I'm knitting the 38" size and noticed a couple of numbers that didn't work out for me. When beginning the neckband with the size 4 needle, there should be 110 stitches. But then the pattern asks you to pick up and knit 112 stitches from the purl bumps. Both of these sets of stitches need to be the same number if you're going to use a 3-needle bind off. This only seems to be an issue for the 38" size.

Has anyone made this size and could tell me if they found a problem with the numbers?

Ease

Katie posted a question about ease on a recent post. I'm responding in a new post because I think this may be helpful for everyone. Eunny Jang recently responded to a similar question about ease for the Tangled Yoke cardigan on Ravelry:

"I think the model had only an inch or so of ease in the pictured sweater - but I think this sweater would look fine with a couple more inches of ease as well. It's not very dramatically shaped - part of that is the illusion created by how deep the ribbing is. Instant waistline! The ribbing is a garter rib, too, which is less binding than a regular rib, so that stealthy fake waistline doesn't come at the expense of being able to draw a deep breath."

Started and Addicted

I started working on this pattern last Friday and have had a hard time working on anything else. I'm using Classic Elite Classic Silk in a rust colorway.

Can't wait to see how it progresses. It's a great knit so far.

After getting Claudia's stellar instructions, I can add a photo. I have about 2" before I put this all together and start knitting the yoke.

One Sleeve Done...

Although (or perhaps because) sleeves bore the crap out of me, I'm really glad to be getting them out of the way first. This may become policy for future sweaters... we shall see.

As predicted, I had to add a bunch of plain rows at the top of the sleeve (I worked 30 instead of 17), and I'm still glad the stitches are held instead of bound off in case I need more. Oy. But I love the Silky Wool. It works up like woolly tree bark, and yet it's so light! Awesome.

Progress so far

I've completed the body up to the sleeve openings and just have a couple more inches on the sleeves before I can put it all together. Can hardly wait to start on that gorgeous cable! You can see my progress at:

Hi, Everyone! I'm very excited to be joining this KAL. I just bought my yarn and starting swatching last night. I'm using Rowan Felted Tweed in Carbon (159).

This color is really beautiful. It's a dark grey (almost bluish), with lovely flecks of brown, cream, and blue. I started with size 5 needles and tried both the rib and stockinette. I'll switch to size 4 tonight to compare. 5 looks like it's a little too big. The stitches are fuzzy and I was too tired to count them accurately last night!

I can't wait to get started!

Starting Out

Hi! This should be a fun knit, and I especially want to see what everyone else comes up with. It's kind of killing me that I don't get to do any of the pretty cabling for a long time yet.

I started the cardigan earlier this week, so I'm currently working my way through the ribbing. I'm using Knitpicks Palette in Garnet Heather. Although I don't know how comparable it is to the suggested yarn, it does seem to fit the basic requirements (wool yarn with which I can get the required gauge). It's not especially soft, but I like it. It doesn't hurt that the total cost of the yarn comes to under $20.


I had to use size 3 needles to get gauge, which surprised me, since I usually am either right on with the suggested needle size or a bit too tight (so I go up a needle size). It makes even less sense when you consider that Palette is actually a fingering weight yarn, while the Rowan Felted Tweed is sportweight. Maybe it's just that I haven't been knitting that long, and my knitting style is still changeable.

When I saw there was a KAL on KR, I thought it would be fun to join you. I don't have a blog, but I have the impression that is not necessary (if it is, I'll have to decline your invitation). I've knit the body up to the sleeve openings and am now knitting the sleeves - about ready to switch to St St. I'm using the Rowan Felted Tweed in Whisper, a light blue. Size differences

Hello, again! I have some questions about the fit of the arms. Right now I'm working on Rusted Root by Zephyr, which is my first sweater. I've only been knitting for 7 months, so I'm a little bit afraid to start the TYC since it looks so challenging. I checked the measurements of the TYC against my favorite store bought cardigan, and I have some concerns about the fit of the arm.

Armhole (armscye) on the TYC is 12.25 inches / my cardigan is 16". And my arm measures about 12" all by itself, so I'm worried that the armhole will be too small or that it will really stress those stitches with a lot of pulling.

Wrist cuff circumference on the TYC is 9.5 inches / my cardigan is 6". My own wrist is 6" around. So why is the cuff on the TYC so much bigger?

Maybe those who've already knit and attached the arm can clue me in on why the wrist is so large and the armscye so small?

Yarn purchased

I purchased my yarn today! I am going with Knit Picks Swish DK in Moss. Since its my first sweater I wanted to go with something that wouldn't break the bank. I can't wait to get my hands on it - such a beautiful shade of green. I debated going with a pink shade, but in the end green won! I have another couple of projects on the needles now but will probably get to it in a few weeks.

I fell in love with this sweater way back when Eunny was giving little glimpses on her site before becoming editor. I knew when it came out in IK there would be a KAL. I have ordered the Felted Tweed in Rage it is a red color. I am so excited to get the yarn and get going on this.

It was love at first sight when I saw this sweater. I went out and bought the yarn in a dark red tweed. I'm not sure exactly when I will get this on the needles but it will be sometime this fall.

will felted tweed soften up?

Well, I bought my yarn today - rowan felted tweed in color 152. It's a beautiful shade of teal. The only thing I was concerned about was whether this yarn will soften up because it feels a little itchy. I wonder if I put it in a cream rinse if it'll soften up enough for my sensitive skin? I'm going to knit a gauge swatch and give it a rinse to see. If not, I may experiment with a different yarn. I live in Texas, so I wouldn't mind something with a little cotton content. I'd like to hear what alternate yarns others are using for this pattern.

Getting The Ball Rolling

Since no one else has posted yet, I'll get us started. Unfortunately I don't have pictures for this post (although I wish I did) because I am at work and I can't remember the password or username to my flickr account (I love and loathe those 'remember me' check-boxes). Anyway, on to the content.

I am working the sleeves first, for a couple of reasons. First, they didn't have the right size circular at the lys. Lame. Second, I hate sleeves. I am on record as stating politely that they 'demand fortitude'. I also usually do them flat so that I can do both at once (because I seem to be the only knitter in existence whose blood does not run cold at the thought of seaming). However, I was so intrigued by the seamless - but with a faux seam (!) - sleeve that I decided to follow directions. Thankfully, the first one is more than halfway done (this is where the picture would be). I will, however, have to add about twenty rows to compensate for my very long reach. Anyway, this way I'll get to the sweater yoke and I'll be like, 'Make two sleeves? I don't have to make two sleeves! I already made them!'

Aside from adding sleeve length, which is so standard for me that I don't even consider it a mod, I'm thinking of adding a dart or two to the bust. Here's the quandary: I'm a 36. The pattern is either 34 or 38. I wound up opting for the smaller size because it was a better fit at the waist and I like my garments more fitted than loose. I'm planning on some aggressive blocking. I'm also thinking that a couple of bust darts, increased in above the waist and decreased out before the cables on the yoke, would not go amiss.

Thoughts?

Welcome, One And All!

Hello everybody! Welcome to the Tangled Yoke Cardigan Knit-Along! I am Claudia, your administratrix, and this is my first time hosting a KAL, so it should be a fun learning experience for everyone (hopefully).

Well, I don't know about you guys, but from the second I saw the web preview I was on the edge of my seat to knit this sweater.

Ah, the Tangled Yoke Cardigan (Interweave Knits, Fall 2007). Clean lines, interesting details and good shaping all yell out, 'knit me now!' And I thought, 'Who am I to refuse? And why not knit it together some other fans?' And so, here we are.

There are a few things that this KAL needs that I'm hoping you might be able to help contribute. We're going to need buttons, for one thing, if anyone wants to design them, and I think it would be super cool if we had one of those flickr links with the moving images that everyone seems to have on their blog.
