Flying through with a Whining Wrist

I've decided to jump, head-first, into this one. It's such a beautiful pattern, I couldn't resist!

As is my usual MO, I plan on modding this sweetie. First off, I decided to use a stash-yarn, which unfortunate is going to prove a gamble: I have 10 skeins of Jamieson's DK in Port Wine (a lovely colour!) which only amounts to 1075 metres of yarny goodness. With this in mind, I've decided to shorten the sleeves, probably to just above the elbow.

Also, as I was working along, I noticed my row count is abnormally high! I hope this means I won't use up as much yarn.

I've also nipped in the waist a bit, (once again, in a desperate attempt to save some for what I imagine will be a yarn-gobbling yoke and tedious ribbed edging).

Now, off to knit. I do have one nagging problem - what colour buttons to buy? Any suggestions? I think it may be tricky to match the purple. Would a pearly white be too stark a contrast? How about slate grey?
Thanks!

When you say you have an unusually high row count, do you mean you are getting more rows per inch than usual? Because that would actually mean you are using more yarn to knit the same size piece, not less.

Medium to dark colored buttons probably would look best. The slate grey would be nice, I think, or even some plain matte finish pewter ones.

Thanks for the tips on buttons colours. I must be off soon to search for them.

Yes, I did mean I'm getting more rows per inch. I thought it would work out that I'm using less yarn (and this is most probably faulty reasoning) because, where it says to knit until you have, say 6 inches from the CO, the correct gauge would have you knitting say, 7 pattern repeats, whereas I would only have to do 5.

I'll find out soon enough, with any luck!

What I'm thinking is that, say the pattern gauge is 7 rows per inch but you are actually getting 9 rows per inch, that means that to get one inch of fabric you'd have to knit 9 rows instead of 7 rows. Since you'd have to knit 2 more rows to get the inch of length, you'd be using more yarn. I could be wrong, but that's how it seems to me.

But it seems to me that if you are only having to do 5 repeats instead of 7 to get the recommended length, then you are actually getting less rows per inch, not more.

I've noticed a row count issue, too, but I'm using Jo Sharp Tweed. Maybe it's just the pattern? There's a whole thread on the Knittyboard about people not getting row gauge for this pattern and also just a general outcry of "I never get row gauge!". In my opinion, you can just about always fudge your row gauge.

I think a grey would be nice, but I'd go for a warm brown wood button.

Oooh, warm brown wood sounds great! And, probably a lot easier to find than the exact right purple!
